Our tutor spotlight this week is Brooke Trapp. She has been tutoring here at the Writing Center for 2 years. She is originally from Texarkana, Texas. She earned her Bachelor's degree from a university in Abilene, Texas. Brooke came to Texas Tech for her Masters degree and now she is a second year doctoral candidate in Piano Pedagogy. She said she chose to study Piano Pedagogy because she loves piano but she knew that it would be “a more satisfying career in music if I focused on teaching.” She really enjoys teaching and learning how to teach better, so pedagogy fit more with her long term goals. Texas Tech was her school of choice because the faculty was the most friendly and it was the most welcoming environment. She is also a self proclaimed coffee addict. Her favorite is a cappuccino from Yellow House Coffee here in Lubbock.
Brooke decided to become a tutor because she believes writing and music go together. Both are ways she can express herself. She is interested in the process of both and being a tutor allowed her to better understand the different processes for each. When asked her favorite part about tutoring, she said “I love seeing a client become more confident in themselves and their writing.” She said she also loves seeing that lightbulb moment where students suddenly understand what they want to say and clients feel better about the way something sounds.
Lastly, we asked Brooke “if you were a box of cereal, what would you be and why?” Her answer was quite relatable. She said “I’d be a box of honey nut cheerios because I think what you see is what you get with me and maybe there is a little extra sweetness in there. Simple but sweet.”
