Our tutor spotlight this week is Kimberly Jones. She began tutoring in the Fall of 2018. Kim completed her undergraduate degree at Texas Tech, and came back for her doctoral program. She passed her dissertation defense for the School of Art’s Fine Arts doctoral program. Kimberly chose Texas Tech because of her family legacy. Her mother and father went to school at Tech and met while in school. Her sister was also enrolled in medical school at Tech when Kimberly applied. She only applied to Tech for her undergraduate because she felt the most comfortable coming here. She knew the campus and what major to pursue, and that she could always call her sister if she needed help. Kimberly is originally from Houston but considers Lubbock her home.
Kimberly is left handed and loves finding left handed shops. She tries to find one when she visits a new place. Her personal favorite left handed shops are in San Francisco and London. She is also an avid reader. She said that while working on her dissertation, she did not get to read very much so she is trying to make up for lost time. Since June, Kim has read 80 novels. Her favorite from the 80 she recently read is the Winter Night Trilogy Book 1: The Bear and the Nightingale.
Kimberly wanted to be a tutor because she loves teaching and helping students. She taught Art History for four years while in the doctoral program. She is currently teaching Art Appreciation. She has a passion for working one on one with students. Kimberly says that tutoring has also helped her improve her own writing because she has the chance to step away from her own work and learn new skills while helping other students. Her favorite part about tutoring is the opportunity to build students up and encourage them through the process. She said “That’s what this writing center is about, building up rather than tearing down.”
Lastly, we asked Kimberly, “If you could be a character from any film, who would you be and why?” She said she would want to be Minerva McGonagall because she would want to have magic. She continued to say “Also because she is an animagus and can turn into her cat form. Her hats are fabulous and as a wizard you get to wear cool hats. Overall she is just doing her own thing and is an independent lady.”
