Lauren has been a tutor at the University Writing Center since the fall semester of 2018. She is a senior this year, double majoring in English literature and technical communication. Lauren plans on graduating in May. She said she chose these two majors because she values the skills that she learns from her classes, “Having good written and verbal communication skills equips people with the ability to connect with others and think critically.” While studying at Texas Tech, Lauren was also a member of the Writing Fellows program, which trains undergraduate students to be in-class tutors in English 1301 and 1302. Lauren decided to attend Texas Tech because she fell in love with the beautiful campus. She also loved the mascot and said, “I mean, who doesn’t want to be a Red Raider!?”

An interesting fact about Lauren is that she attended high school in Japan. She said she had a great time and still misses the food everyday!

The Writing Fellows program introduced tutoring and the University Writing Center to Lauren. She wanted to become a tutor because she believes it is valuable to help students better understand and improve their writing. She said, “I think it is an important thing to help students see the beauty and importance in all kinds of writing.” During her time at the Writing Center, Lauren said her favorite part of tutoring is helping students improve. She loves seeing the light-bulb moments and watching her students’ skills and confidence in their writing grow.

Lastly, we asked Lauren, if she could be a box of cereal, what would she be and why?

She said, “I would be Reese’s Puffs because I would absolutely be a back-up dancer on the commercials.”
